Most of us who are regular followers of the beauty industry and their non-stop cycle of collections are well aware of the outrage surrounding MAC's Rodarte collection. When Temptalia first released the names and information about the Fall 2010 collection, I was immediately surprised and upset to see that both MAC and Rodarte (as they were collaborating) showed so little concern for the women of Juarez in the distasteful naming of their collection. Many other beauty bloggers and followers felt the same way and these two blogs do a great job exploring the issues at hand: Married to the Mirror and Pink Sith.

However, I come here to post in happiness that MAC and Rodarte have decided to donate 100% of their profit from this collection to a new Women and Girls of Juarez Initiative. Originally, the company announced that they'd donate $100,000 from sales and rename the products. I'm equally impressed by the heartfelt and seemingly sincere apologies by both companies.

Although I clearly love beauty, fashion and that whole sphere, I do feel it's always important to be a concerned global citizen. Say what you will but I would never feel right by from a collection that capitalized on the suffering of others (especially other women) and I'm glad that MAC and Rodarte saw the error of their ways. Orly Needs Better Writers

When it comes to upcoming beauty collections, companies need either great pictures to share and promote or an out of this world description to really grab the consumer's attention. So, Orly, I'm looking at you. What on earth were you talking about when you released this description of your Fall 2010 Plastix collection?

"ORLY, the company that continually pioneers the Nail Lacquer arena with the most cutting edge colors, technology and textures, introduces the Plastix Collection. Complementing the Fall 2010 runway looks that featured bright neon colors amid shiny black plastic, latex, and rubber reinventions of vintage must-haves, Plastix evokes the vintage classic trend with four new lacquers and a unique new formula that coats the nails with a smooth glossy matte “plastic” finish. The exclusive finish and texture is a first in the nail category, delivering a monochromatic, shiny and rubbery look that takes experimentation to an entirely new level, with the focus being on both the distinctive nail surface, as well as the latest in color trends. The unique look can not be achieved with color alone as the finish is a must for recreating the true “plastic” statement."

Let's take a peak in the Webster dictionary shall we?

Matte: : lacking or deprived of luster or gloss: as a: having a usually smooth even surface free from shine or highlights (matte metals) (a matte finish) b : having a rough or granular surface

Glossy: 1 : having a surface luster or brightness (rich glossy leather)

Through these definitions, we can determine that matte, while capable of being either rough or smooth, is the opposite of glossy. Matte: without shine. Glossy: with shine/brightness.

Orly's contradictory description of their Plastix collection is intriguing but leaves me utterly bewildered. How will this polish be both glossy and matte? What "vintage class trend" does Plastix evoke? I'm not sure anyone ever seriously donned plastic on their nails. The idea of plastic or rubber being a fall fashion trend sounds a bit terrifying but I guess only time will tell. Finally, since when is Orly the pioneer of "cutting edge colors, technology, and textures?" Don't get me wrong, I do think Orly makes quality polishes but this bit of self flattery is hilarious. Note the description of the two of the colors: Retro Red is a "traditional red" and Old School Orange is "classic orange."* This whole write up is a complete mess and isn't helping the company's reputation as a sort of runner up in salon nail brands. Come on, Orly, get it together!

Perhaps, the "Plastix" finish will be similar to frosted glass. Now, that's something I could go for. Hopefully Orly will send out a follow up description or swatches soon to clear up the confusion. Never a dull day in the nail world!

*The other two colors are a little more unique with Viridian Vinyl, a "glossy blue green," and Purple Pleather, the "shiny purple" of the bunch.

Bad Benefit Mascara: BADgal Plum Mascara

Benefit is most easily recognized by their fun, retro inspired packaging and quirky product names. Though the line might seem a bit gimmicky at times, I have a few favorites including the Creaseless Cream Eyeshadows/Liners, Coralista blush, and Silky Finish lipsticks. Since I've had good luck with Benefit so far, I figured I'd like their Bad Gal mascara as well. I decided to be adventurous and test the "Plum" shade.

The Bad Gal Plum Mascara features a big, thick brush coated in a deep plum shade. Benefit's website describes the mascara on their website, saying, "Our rich, luxurious plum mascara intensifies your natural eye color while lushifying your lashes." Lushifying?

The color may look a little scary to some but I thought it would be flattering for my hazel eyes. Typically colored mascaras do not look as intense when applied as they do in the tube and Bad Gal Plum is no exception. In fact, it doesn't look plum or purple at all. It just looks like a cheap black mascara! Very disappointing. I didn't find that the mascara brought out the colors of my eyes or had any flattering effects.

I also have a bone to pick with the wand and formula of Bad Gal Plum Mascara. The wand is big, which is usually better for creating volume than length. I prefer small wands as length is my issue but that's a personal preference. However, it's just too big to really coat your lashes. Little volume is added and I found the formula way too drying. Not "lushifying" at all! Overall, I was disappointed in this mascara. It's a decent price for a higher end mascara ($19) and seems like a fun addition to any makeup collection. Yet the product doesn't do what Benefit promises and hardly measures up to even cheap drugstore mascaras. My hunt for the perfect mascara continues! This one's going in the trash.

Marine Life: A Glorified Glitzy Seahorse

It seems like at least once (if not twice) a year, MAC comes out with a collection or particular item that sends makeup lovers into a frenzy. This collection (see the 2009 Hello Kitty) or item has an unexplainable ability to create numerous "lemmings," (or intense desire for a product beyond rational), break banks, and inspire eBay scalpers. Ladies and gentleman, I present to you this season's MAC "must have" at $26.

I'll guess if you're reading my blog, you already know about Marine Life from the To the Beach collection and hype surrounding it. Marine Life was featured in Elle and Allure, selling out online within hours. I was initially interested in this beauty powder (to be used as a highlighter and/or blush) for the following reasons:
-Beauty Powders work well for me and my skin tone/type.
-I'm still on the search for a decent coral blush.
-It's, um, a seahorse.
-It's pretty.
These reasons, though superficial (it's makeup), seemed enough to warrant a purchase so I asked about the product at my local MAC counter a few days before the collection's release date. They hadn't received any Marine Life at the time and still haven't to this date. The other two MAC counters had sold out within two hours. I was told I could continue to check back at my usual MAC counter but I think I'll pass.

Sure, it's a really pretty product and unusual in its packaging. However, in my mind (and this is coming from a certified makeup addict), no product is worth this much effort. In fact when I actually saw the Marine Life tester in person, I was a little disappointed. Once the gold overspray fades, you're left with a raised seahorse in clown orange and baby pink powder. I know my opinion is not a popular one (Makeupalley.com is blowing up with positive reviews and messages) but I think I'll save my money for the Venomous Villains collection. There's always another collection, another must have, and more hype waiting for MAC addicts.

London, Liberty, and Loveliness

Target released their Liberty of London collection on March 14, generating a ton of buzz about Liberty of London's trademark gorgeous prints and florals. This is the first Target designer collection I've been really excited about. The prints are available in women's clothing, accessories (scarves, wallets, totes), bedding, housewares, swimwear, sleepwear, dining, decor, children's clothes, and even bikes! I was expecting for there to be so much Liberty of London wear to choose from and I love the variety!

I tried on several of the clothes even thought the selection was slightly picked through by the time I went to my local Target. The stand out pieces of Liberty London are the dresses! There are several to choose from and I selected this one:

I was not expecting to love this one shoulder dress as much as I do! It's a stunning fabric with solid construction (completely lined) and a flattering shape. I most like that the one shoulder style looks unusual but is quite wearable and highlights the face and shoulders (often one of the leaner parts of a woman's body). Also the tied waist perfectly defines your middle without cinching too much.

The dress retails for $34.99, a great price for this beautiful dress, and is made of 100% polyester. Usually, I hate polyester but I will say it works for this dress. The polyester looks more expensive than a cotton fabric would and will wear better (often Target's cotton dresses fall apart or pill quickly). I'm so happy I found a maxi dress that flatters me and that it just happens to be part of the Liberty of London collection.

I'll most likely style this dress with a tousled, casual updo, thin, gold hoops, and perhaps gold sandals. Any suggestions are welcome!

There are so many cute dresses with this line and I've provided some links to my other favorite pieces. I wish I could buy almost all from this line!

I'm definitely going back to purchase one of the Liberty of London mugs and a few gifts for friends. I'm a big tea and coffee drinker and I know I'll look forward to using one of these pretty mugs!

The stationary and storage pieces would be great for day to day use or even a home office.

I hope you enjoyed my little review. Overall, I'd give the line a B+. These cheery prints should attract many customers although I know some will shy away from the brightness and prefer simplicity. The variety of choices is great, especially for a big box store like Target, the clothes fit generally true to size (perhaps even running a bit large), and are made well.

TRESemme Conditioner: Oh La La!

Back to review a product that is definitely in my "holy grail" status!

I've used several different conditioners in the past few years, including conditioners by Herbal Essences, Redken, and Garnier. However, I haven't found any that I like better than TRESemme's B12 & Gelatin Anti-breakage conditioner for the results and price.

I have used TRESemme's B12 & Gelatin Anti-breakage conditioner as well as their Vitamin E Moisture Rich conditioner. I would highly recommend either but for my breakage prone hair, I prefer the B12 & gelatin conditioner.

The conditioner runs for about $5 at Target for a huge size (32 oz). I love the price which can't be beat and it definitely is "salon quality." I don't think you have to pay a pretty penny for hair products (or make up for that matter) that work well.

As a conditioner, B12 & Gelatin is thick and creamy and non-sticky. It doesn't weigh the hair down at all and my hair is quite fine. I recommend those with fine or thinning hair use a small amount of conditioner with enough to coat the ends.

Now onto the results...my hair has grown at least three inches in the past three months since using this conditioner regularly. My hair does not grow quickly. I'm lucky if it grows half an inch per month and frequently have to cut off length due to split ends. My hair stylist was raving over how much my hair had grown when I went to see her this week and only took off a little in a trim. My hair has benefited so much for this conditioner!

I later found out that Dr. Gott recommends TRESemme conditioners for thinning hair/hair growth. You can read his article here (Be sure to scroll down to the middle of the page).

Benefit Coralista, Peachy Please!

Benefit Cosmetics features fun, retro packaging and great products. The story behind the line is as cute and whimiscal as their image. Benefit Cosmetics was started by the Ford twins of San Francisco, California, with the simple idea, "Who says makeup has to be serious to be good?" And with that the playful, sassy and sweet cosmetics line was born.

Today I'm going to review one of my favorite Benefit products: CORALista blush. Coralista is one of Benefit's top sellers and with good reason. I have been looking for a peachy blush but since I'm fair skinned and cool toned, the search hasn't been easy. I happened upon this product at the Benefit counter in Memphis and then received it for my birthday a few months ago.

The wild, tropical themed packaging is the first thing to catch your eye. Coralista comes in a square shaped box, with a pink leopard print design. Even if the packaging is too loud for your taste (personally, I think it's fun!), keep in mind the blush is worth your money and it will be easier to spot in your makeup bag.

Now onto the color- Benefit describes Coralista as "a warm coral-pink cheek powder." The color is one the warm side but the pink tones in Coralista make it wearable for just about any skin tone. Coralista will most definitely flatter warm tones and will offer a believable peachy flush for cool tones. (Check out the color below)

One of my favorite things about this blush is the brush! Usually brushes included with makeup aren't keepers and typically don't perform as well as brushes bought seperately. I tried the blush with my usual makeup brush first but I found the application looked a bit heavy. So, I reached for the Coralista blush brush and what a world of difference. The brush comes with a wooden handel and squared off bristles which are great for emphasizing cheekbones. The blush also lasts a long time, needing no reapplications throughout the day, and offers very subtle shimmer.

I recommend this blush to anyone!

Base Coat Bonanza!

Blog time!

Today I'm reviewing two base coats, one's a definite win and the other is a huge fail. Read on to learn more.

First, I'm going to let you in on my new favorite base coat: The Nail Life Revitalizer Treatment in the Original Formula. Yes, treatment. The great thing about this product is that it can be used in several different ways. First, it serves as an excellent base coat, to be used before applying your polish. It make your nails smooth like glass and shiny. Your polish will apply easily, adhering to the base coat without being so "sticky," that the polish loses its smoothness. Next, it can be used as a weekly or daily treatment for weak, sensitive, or damaged nails. You can apply it alone to protect your nails or as a pre-treatment and then use your favorite base coat. Finally, I have read that it can used as a top coat. I can tell that Nail Life would add shine but personally, I'd stick with my favorite quick dry top coat.

Keep in mind, the Nail Life Revitalizer Treatment is on the thicker side since it protects your nails from damage. You can find this product at Sally Beauty Supply for $7.99. It comes in a large bottle (1.19 oz) and can be found on sale from time to time. Nail Life also offers a Formaldehyde-Free version of this product as well as a Gripper Base Coat, Ridge Filler, Cuticle Treatment, and more.

And here's my not-so-favorite base coat of late: Sally Hansen Insta-Grip Fast Dry Base Coat. I bought this product at Walgreens when I was looking for a new base coat. I've had good luck with most of Sally Hansen's nail products this one was a disappointment. It may be a bit unfair to pit this product against Nail Life since it is not a treatment. Therefore, it's not as versatile or protective. However, as a plain ol' base coat, it's no good either. It took a long time to dry and was incredibly sticky. My polish did not go on smoothly at all. In fact, it was bumpy and streaky with bubbles. I waited plenty of time for it dry. Maybe others will have a better experience with Insta-Grip but I was disappointed. The only good thing I can say is that the product is inexpensive and shiny. The Sally Hansen Insta-Grip Fast Dry Base Coat is priced at $5 to $6 and can be found at drugstores.

It's candy themed and contains a new mint green color, somewhat similar to Chanel's Jade nail polish. It's $8 instead of $25 (and most likely not out of stock!). According to several bloggers, the collection will be available in November.

Review: Batiste Dry Shampoo

Need a quick fix for limp, oily hair in the morning with no time to shampoo? Just want to freshen up between washings? Then a dry shampoo is your best choice. I think we all know it's best to give our hair a break from shampooings but greasy hair is never very appealing.

I've done the baby powder trick, which takes care of any oiliness, but does little to add volume. I prefer spray dry shampoos because you can work it through your hair to clean up and add lift. My favorite dry shampoo is Batiste! It's a good price, at approx $9.95, and lasts for a long time. There are three different scents: original (citrus-y), blush (floral), and tropical (as it sounds-my favorite). These are incredibly convenient for travel or anytime you've overslept.

To use a spray dry shampoo, shake the can and angle the spray nozzle at your roots from about a foot away. Work through the roots and back of your hair after letting the product settle. Be sure to brush thoroughly especially if you have dark hair. I also use a hair dryer after brushing for extra volume because my hair gets very flat on the second day.

It's that simple. I highly recommend this product to everyone especially those with fine, oily hair!

How To: Save Money on Makeup! (And Still Have Fun)

Don't let a tighter budget rain on your beauty parade! Here are some easy ways to save dollars and get the most out of your purchases while shopping for beauty products:

1. Think Multipurpose

The best products are ones you can use for a variety of applications and looks. This rule goes for a lot of things in life-- you'll get more use out of a blender than a Margarita Machine (thanks, Mom). Look for cream blushes or blush sticks you can use as lip colors too. Or pick a highlight shade/shimmer brick that can double as eyeshadow. Speaking of eye shadows, try applying your favorite shade wet with a thin brush as eyeliner! Or put that foundation that was a too light to use by applying it like a concealer under the eyes. Find a face mask that can serve as an acne spot treatment. Utilize palettes of complementary colors instead of purchasing several products separately. The list goes on! Multipurpose products save you money and effort. They are also perfect for travel!

2. Staples First

Invest in good everyday products like foundation, concealer, mascara, and brushes. By invest, I don't mean that you have to spend a lot of money but make these items your priority when shopping. If you have to choose between buying a foundation that matches your skin tone perfectly or a beautiful smokey eyeshadow, go for the foundation. You'll use it everyday and it will serve its purpose of creating a beautiful canvas for the rest of your products. Skip the trendy vibrating mascara and pick up the formula that makes you lashes look long, full, and natural.

3. Know the Return Policy

If you don't like a product, you should by all means return it! But first, know the policy. Most department stores will accept a used product within a certain amount of days after purchase. So don't let that blush (or what have you) you're unhappy with sit there. Take it back before time wastes. And always save your boxes and receipts! Know that many drugstores have tighter return policies (see number 4 on my list), so you'll have to be a bit more sure of your choices.

4. Review, Research & Ask Questions

When you can, check out reviews of items you're looking at on makeupalley.com. You'll see the comments and opinions of others who have tried the product already. You can filter these reviews by age, skin tone, and skin type. Furthermore, each product is individually reviewed for its price and packaging as well as its overall performance. Write reviews yourself to help others! Look for "top reviewers" (denoted on their MUA profiles or by individual reviews) to find people who review often and accurately.

Check out the web for a comparison of prices for your desired product. You may be available to find a cheaper price or alternative on beautycrunch.com, ebay.com, or cherryculture.com. Just be careful to purchase products that are hygienic and legitimate (fake MAC products are all over ebay!). Look at TJ Maxx and Marshall's for discount beauty products. I've found Lancome, Hard Candy, Sugar, Stila, and the Balm at these stores for cheap!

Don't be afraid to ask a makeup artist at the beauty counter for advice. Sometimes sales people can be pushy but their job is to help you. Don't feel like you must buy a certain product if you're not happy for the look he or she is suggesting. Makeup artists often know the products very well and making friends with one is always a good thing! Building up a relationship with the artists working at MAC has introduced to beautiful products I would have never chosen myself. Likewise, ask family and friends what they think. You're not tied down to their opinions but an outside perspective is always helpful.

5. Be Cautious with Collections

Here's a rule I need to follow better myself! Beauty collections are tons of fun and limited edition products are so tempting! But collections often mean lots of show and expense. I definitely recommend checking out limited editions collections every now and then but don't get too wrapped up and feeling like you HAVE to buy from every one. Trust me, there will be another similar product and colors do get released again (cough MAC cough)! Sometimes, it's worth buying a few backups of a product you just LOVE and won't be re-released (Estee Lauder's Azuree Soleil..I'm looking at you!) but most of the time, I'd skip and save your money for something else.

6. Get Inspired

If you're in a beauty rut, a new bright lipstick can help but more often than not, you just need a little inspiration! Flip through fashion and beauty magazines from the 40s, 60s, 80s, watch an old Hollywood film, browse tutorials on YouTube, or photograph beautiful things around you! Fresh colors and textures could be the catalyst for a whole new look. Check out the artist's color wheel for different but complementary colors. Read beauty books by Bobbi Brown or Kevyn Aucoin for step by step instructions of makeup application. You'll find new ways to use old favorites in your collection!

My Favorite Purchases of Recent:

1. Baby Pink Tunic from Gap

I must admit this top probably looks quite drab in the photograph but in person and off the hanger, I absolutely love it! I'm 5'11 so tops are frequently way too short on me and I prefer long shirts that skim the hips. This top is billowy and slimming without being shapeless. It ties at the sides and makes me feel ballerina-ish! I've paired it with black skinny jeans from Old Navy and sequined flats by Penny Loves Kenny.

2. MAC Eye shadows in All That Glitters and Haux

(L: All That Glitters; R: Haux)

I asked the makeup artist at MAC to help me find a pair of eye shadows for day time looks. I have to admit I was skeptical of Haux when she first pulled it out. It's not a color I would have picked out but clearly, she knew better! All That Glitters is a gorgeous bronze peach with shimmer that I sweep on the lid with Haux, a matte light brown, in the crease for defintion. These are new everyday staples for me! You can add more Haux in the crease and line with an eggplant color for a more dramatic evening look.

3. Sally Hansen Extreme Wear Nail Polish in Rockstar Pink

This polish has pink, purple, and blue glitter in a clear base. It's definitely a polish I wear over another color, such as a pink or deep purple. It's really fun and I could see myself wearing this on New Year's! Glitter polishes are awful to remove so use a strong polish remover and felt.

I've been getting ready for my month long trip to France (yes!) that I haven't been able to update this blog much in the past week. I thought I'd post some things I've been "lemming" lately for fun. Of course, I'm saving most of my money for France....who knows what I will find!

1. MAC Lipstick in Creme d'Nude

Gotta love MAC Lipsticks. They are gorgeous and affordable! I have a hard time finding nude lipsticks that aren't too pale or orange-y. Creme de Nude looks perfect!

2. OPI Mod About You

Sometimes my obsession with colorful nails makes me go all the way to the opposite end of the spectrum. Pale nails can be gorgeous with an opaque finish and Mod About You looks like no expection. It's not a new OPI color but a beauty supply store near me carries it. Such a pretty baby pink color!

3. Benefit Blush in Coralista

I think even cool skin tones look good in a beautiful warm apricot blush! There's something so summery about a peachy pink blush. Benefit makes lovely blushes and Coralista comes with pretty packaging and a nice size brush. What more could you want?

4. Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow in R.S.V.P.

I have a Creaseless Cream Shadow in Marry Up (a bronzey copper) and it's perfect alone or used as a base/liner. R.S.V.P. is a champagne color that I think would be perfect for a bright eyed look.

5. MAC Eyeshadow in Satin Taupe

Oh, MAC, what you do to my wallet! Taupe is a very hard color to describe but I typically think of it as a grayish brown. However, often times you'll see purple-y gray shadows called taupes too! It's very confusing. No matter, Satin Taupe looks perfect for a daytime crease color or for a unique evening smokey eye.

So, that's my list for now! I'm planning on doing some serious shopping at the Monoprixs and department stores in France but if there happens to be some good duty free beauty shopping at the airports...well, no one's stopping me! :)

How To: Brush Holder!

Many of you have probably seen the Sephora inspired makeup brush holders on websites and beauty blogs. They are so simple to make and great for storing brushes in an attractive and practical way! I used to store my makeup in a brush roll, which is great for travel by the way, but found the roll got dirty quickly. So, check out my take on the Sephora inspired makeup brush holder.

Isn't it cute if I do say so myself? It was easy and quick to make and very cheap!

What I Used:

-Glass Vase from Michael's Craft Store (approx. $5.00)
-Flat Marbles (often found in floral/candle section of craft stores) in peachy pink colors (approx. $4.50)
-A thin Pink Ribbon & tape (approx. $1.00)
-Scrapbooking 3-D Butterfly Stickers (approx. $2.50)

Total Cost: around $13.00

The best thing about this craft is how customizable it is! Alternatively, you can change up the ribbon, beads, and stickers to create a completely different look. Or try painting the glass with appropriate paint. Others have used plastic containers and paint pens for an easy way to add a personal touch and design.

Some websites (including glitzy-glam.com) sell premade brush holders but I recommend making your own. You'll save money on the overall cost and of course, shipping and be able to personalize the holder to your own style.

Review: Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Foundation

I'll be doing several reviews over the next few days. I've got some new favorite staples and a few fun things to talk about so be sure to return to my blog frequently to keep up!

I thought I'd review my favorite foundation, Lancome's Teint Idole Ultra. Teint Idole Ultra is a liquid oil-free foundation that comes in a glass pump tube. I have been using this foundation for the past five years. It's a staple in my everyday makeup look. I have oily acne-prone skin. My skin can be very sensitive to products. I use Retin-A so I have to be careful what sort of products I put on my face.

With Teint Idole Ultra, I do not use a primer. Instead I use Coppertone Oil Free Faces Lotion in SPF 30. I don't think you need a primer with this foundation unless your skin is dry and/or you want to fill in lines and wrinkles first. It is a personal preference. After using sunscreen, I either apply the foundation with clean fingers or the Sonia Kashuk skunk brush. The best thing about this foundation is it's ability to blend and the amount of coverage. I would describe the coverage as medium; you can build up to a full coverage look with more layers. Personally, I prefer medium coverage because you can hide imperfections but forego the "pancake" look. You can easily cover blemishes, marks, and lights scars with this foundation. I can even skip concealer under my eyes if I'm in a hurry. It does not cover acne scars fully. You will need a concealer for that and I recommend Laura Mercier's Secret Camouflage.

The foundation is easy to apply and a little goes a long way! The finish is some what matte. Teinte Idole is not a foundation that will give you a "dewy" or "glowy" look. Instead, it deemphasizes pores with a shine free finish. I find that using this foundation plus a good concealer you can achieve an airbrushed look! If you want a more glowy look, try pairing this foundation with a shimmery blush or highlight shade.

And yes, this foundation does wear well! I do not know if it lasts 14 hours since I've never worn it that long but it does last at least 8 hours without touch up. It doesn't even sweat off when I'm at the gym. I have never experienced any break outs from the foundation. That's why I've been coming back to it for five years!

This foundation is expensive, priced at approximately $40.00. I know this is a lot to spend on a foundation but the good news is Teint Idole performs amazing well and lasts quite a while. A bottle usually gets me through four months and I wear makeup almost every day. Since you don't need to touch up, you won't be using as much makeup. If you are worried about cost, try mixing this foundation with your favorite drug store foundation to save money (learned this trick from the lovely Panacea81)!

Lancome's Teint Idole Ultra comes in eighteen shades. I wear Ivoire 2C and it's the perfect match for my skin tone. For reference, I am a MAC NW20.

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Pros: Long wearing, build able coverage, wide color range, easy to blend, oil-free
Cons: Expensive, may be too matte for some wearers

I highly recommend this foundation to anyone who struggles with acne and blemishes. I have been through the ringer with skin issues and this foundation has never failed me!

10. Katy Perry

Katy Perry's fashion sense is pretty bold and risky and so is her makeup! This is a girl who loves to have fun with makeup and doesn't take it too seriously. She's cheeky and a bit irreverent. Any girl who wears a hot pink lip gets an A in my book.

9. Kim Kardashian

She may come as a strange choice but I have to admit, I love Kim Kardashian's make up and overall look. She has come off too strong in the past but she's toned it down and looks gorgeous! I love her shiny long waves and doe like eyes. She (or perhaps her makeup artist?) does a great job balancing her eyes and lips for the perfect look.

8. Pat McGrath

Pat McGrath is my favorite make up artist, hands down. She is someone without any formal training but instead takes an artistic approach to beauty. She often forgos brushes and works strictly with her hands. McGrath has done a huge range of looks and thought I'm disappointed that her associated cosmetics line Max Factor is being discontinued, I look forward to the day when I can buy Pat McGrath make up....and I hope that's very soon!

7. Diane Lane

Could she be any more beautiful? This woman seems to get more gorgeous every year! I love her wholesome, natural look. Her skin is phenomenal! Talk about the fountain of youth.

6. Queen Latifah

I LOVE Queen Latifah and I always have. Did anyone else watch her talk show in the past? Maybe that was just me but you have to admit, she is an amazing model of self-confidence and poise. She just seems like an awesome person who has remained to true to herself and her values in Hollywood.

5. Kate Winslet

I think Kate Winselt is finally getting the credit she deserves. She is an amazing actress- someone with a true talent and not just a "celebrity." The media has been too caught up in her weight in the past, which is ridiculous because she has an amazing figure. I hate to be cliche but this woman glows from within and it really shows!

4. Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama gets my vote as a beautiful woman because she has brought the role of First Lady up to its 21 century level. She doesn't come across as a prop or sidekick to the President but instead is a real person, a loving wife and mother, with her own interests and values. Her style is chic and effortless, tailored to fit her athletic figure while mindful of the country' economic situation.

3. Cate Blanchett

I love Cate Blanchett because she is beautiful and unique at the same time. She doesn't fit the cookie cutter mold of beauty- she embraces her beautiful fair skin and rejects nips and tucks. I find myself looking up to her the most as a beauty icon out of all the women I listed. And like Winslet, she is a phenomenonal talent!

2. Reese Witherspoon

I might be a bit biased as I'm a Tennessee girl too but who can resist Reese Witherspoon? I love her whole attitude and ethos. She comes across a polite put together woman with a strong sense of self. And her sense of style is spot on! Witherspoon had one of the best break up come backs Hollywood has every seen and I love her for it!

1. Freida Pinto

Pinto is my pick as the most beautiful woman in Hollywood. Or maybe the world! She is absolutely gorgeous and seems completely unaware of her beauty. Just like her recent runaway hit, Slumdog Millionaire, Pinto is a sleeper in this category- someone slightly under the radar destined to become a huge success. I love her combination of neutral smokey eyes and natural lips at the Oscar's.

All Natural Product Review: Sensual Soaps

I had the pleasure of coming across Nancy Lee's Sensual Soaps booth at the Memphis Agricenter this past Saturday. If you live in Memphis or plan to visit the Memphis area soon, definitely check out the Agricenter's Farmer's Market (located on 7777 Walnut Grove Rd.) on Saturdays in the summer for delicious local produce and beautiful home made products!

Nancy Lee's soaps are made entirely from natural ingredients- goats milk, olive oil, coconut oil, and other natural oils. For those of us concerned with going green and living simply, this fact is a huge plus! The soaps come in a wide variety of scents including: Lavender, Citrus, Tropical, Sweet Pea, Natural Goat Milk, Gardenia, Oatmeal, Rose, Rosemary-Peppermint, Blue Raspberry, Coconut-free Oatmeal, and Lilac! There is definitely a scent that will please everyone.

I opted to try the Lavender soap. I was very impressed by the light but distinct scent of this soap! It is not heavily perfumed like many products on the market nowadays- instead the lavender scent is fresh and natural (meaning you can layer this soap with your other scents and lotions with no worry!). I have sensitive skin and I prefer naturally scented products since they are less likely to irritate my skin. I also like that the soap is soft to the touch and doesn't strip away at your skin like many soaps. The soap lathers up nicely and left my skin smelling clean and feeling soft. I've experienced no break outs or reactions.

My mom chose the Gardenia soap (pictured above), which also smells heavenly. Nancy Lee sells Sherpa Pink Himalayan bath salts as well. The soaps are $4 for 3.75-4.5 ounce bar.

I recommend these soaps to anyone looking for a naturally scented soap at a nice price! I will definitely repurchase from Sensual Soaps.

Top Ten Lip Products

My Top Ten Lip Products:

So, this list has been circulating around blogs for quite a while and I thought I'd join in. "Lip products" includes lip sticks, balms, glosses, stains, and treatments--the whole nine yards. I've chosen by top ten based on both their formula/wear and the actual color.

10. Vaseline Lip Therapy Advanced Formula- approx. $1.39

This is my absolute favorite lip treatment and I've tried everything from Chapstick to Kiehl's #1. This balm stands out because it's soothing and moisturizing without being too thick and can be found at any drugstore. I also like that the product has an almost blue-ish clear tint which makes my lips look natural but better.

9. L'Oreal HiP Jelly Balm in Delectable- approx. $9.00

HiP Jelly Balms are a dupe for MAC's Tendertones but actually like their texture better. They are definitely "jellies" in the sense that their texture is sticky and smooth. I love the berry red color and the cotton candy smell!

8. Lancome Juicy Tubes Smoothie in Energizing Melon- approx. $18.00

Juicy Tubes are some of my favorite lip glosses. They are quite sticky which can be troublesome if you have long hair but they also last longer than most glosses because of said stickiness. I can put up with the stick factor because I adore the "Energizing Melon" shade. It's a bright coral shade with pink undertones and golden shimmer. The color is not as scary as it appears in the tube but it is bright and perfect for summer! Because of the fuchsia and coral blend, I think this lip gloss would flatter both warm and cool skin tones. Wonderful staying power!

7. MAC Hello Kitty Lip Stick in Fashion Mews (Glaze)- approx. $23.99 (LE so it's typically found on ebay now)

This limited edition lipstick is not for the color shy. Fashion mews is a pinky pale lavender hue that is very cool toned. I love Fashion Mews when I want to put the focus on my lips and I find the shade quite flattering. It's such a unique shade and the most wearable lavender lipstick I've found.

6. MAC Dazzleglass in Love Alert- approx. $16.50

I guess I'm a bit of a MAC addict when it comes to lip products. Dazzle glasses are amazing and rival my love for Lancome Juicy Tubes. The formula is less sticky and even more shimmery. Love Alert is my favorite because it's an easy way to wear red lips during the day time that isn't too over the top.

5. Estee Lauder Pure Color Crystal Lipstick in Tiramisu -approx. $22.00

I think EL gets a bad rap as an "old lady" brand. They actually have great foundation, blushes, bronzers, and lip colors! Great color pay off and staying powder. (I'm just not crazy about their eye shadows). Tiramisu is no exception. I recently discovered this lip stick and it is beautiful! I know I'm a beauty addict but this color leaves me gushing. It's a sheer peachy nude with bronze flecks. It applies with a glossy finish and it is a great color for day time. Even though, it's a warm color I find it quite flattering and feel like this shade would flatter everyone. (Tiramisu has received amazing reviews on MUA).

4. Estee Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick in Maraschino- approx. $22.50

Another EL? See, I told you they have good colors! This is my favorite red lip stick right now. It's a cherry red shade. Great red for fair skins as it brings out your natural color without being too over bearing. Perfect long lasting formula.

3. Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick in Airy Fairy- approx $4.99

My perfect nude lipstick! I love this pinky-nude for day time or night. It's a good price and wears just as well as higher end lip sticks.

2. Too Faced Lip of Luxury in Marcia, Marcia, Marcia- approx $18.00

Where to begin? The packaging is adorable in a metallic pink case and crystal "gem" on top. It smells like champagne! The color is one of my favorites and perfect for blondes with its frosty pink finish and bronze shimmer (seeing a trend in my favorite colors?). I generally dislike frosts but this one is lovely. I receive the most compliments when I wear this lipstick and that's good enough for me!

1. MAC Lipstick in Snob (Satin)- approx $14.00

Snob just recently beat out Marcia, Marcia, Marcia as my favorite lip product. A baby pink with lavender undertones, this lipstick just stands out with its color and application. The lip stick applies evenly and can build up to more color. Great way to brighten up your complexion!

Review: Organix Hydrating Teatree Mint Shampoo

Tea tree oil based shampoos are excellent for balancing the scalp and removing any build up from other shampoos, conditioners, and styling products. My sister loves tea tree oil based shampoos since her scalp is very tender and her hair is quite dry. I decided to test out a new shampoo she purchased, the Hydrating Teatree Mint Shampoo by Organix.

You'd have to be living under a rock to miss the popularity of green and organic based products on the market. This trend is even moving on to hair care, with many popular lines offering sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners. Organix claims that their Treatree Mint Shampoo is "sulfate free" and derived from "organic Australian tea tree oils."

Why should you care about sulfates?

Sulfates are the active ingredient in creating the lather of bubbles when you shampoo. They give a squeaky clean feeling but unfortunately, they can also strip your hair of oils, making it quite dry, and causing the color to fade faster. Even if you aren't concerned with color protection or going "green," I would add least make sure to use a smaller amount of shampoo in the shower to cut back on dryness.

Back to Organix. I have naturally light blonde wavy hair, with a oily roots and dry ends. My hair is fine but has some volume and quite prone to slipt ends. I do not color my hair. I usually alternate between a volumizing shampoo and daily/clarifying shampoo and follow up with an anti-breakage conditioner.

The Teatree Mint shampoo has a fresh, minty scent and comes in a mint green flip cap bottle of 13 fl oz. I absolutely love the scent and found it lingered long after my initial shampooing. This shampoo tingles your scalp a bit and doesn't lather much (lack of sulfate, this is a good thing). My hair felt quite clean after use and I could definitely tell that product build up had been removed. However, I was disappointed to find how "sticky" this shampoo is. By that I mean it took extra rinsing to remove any residue from my hair. I recommend following up with a deep conditioner (unless your hair is very oily) because the shampoo can by drying.

After drying, I found that my hair looked cleaner, brighter, and bouncier. Since my hair is fine, anything that creates volume ("bounce") gets an extra star in my book. However, the label "hydrating" is misleading. I did not get any extra moisture with this product--hence my use of a heavy conditioner to follow up!

I'll keep using Organix Teatree Mint Shampoo once or twice a week to remove build up. It definitely keeps my hair from being weighted down and just smells amazing.

OPI Banana Bandana Review & Pictures

So, I told you yellow is a big color for this summer, especially in regards in to nail polish...well, check out what I bought yesterday: OPI's Banana Bandana from their 2009 SUNBelievable Collection.

I did a few quick swatches to show you the color. I think it looks a bit more washed out in these pictures than in real life. It's not a color for everyone but I LOVE it! Banana Bandana is a lot more subtle in hue than many other yellow polishes.

OPI's Banana Bandana is part of their 2009 SUNbelievable Collection. The collection features four shades, a foil sea blue (Sea? I Told You), a hot coral shade (I'm His Coral-friend), a flashy fuchsia with shimmer (If the Fuchsia Fits) and of course, our Banana Bandana.

Banana Bandana is a pale lemon yellow hue with the faintest shimmer. It dries with a shiny finish.

The color applies like a lot of yellow polishes: streaky, thin, and goopy. It took me either three thin coats (seems to work best this way) or two thick coats to achieve opacity. I will say it applied better than other yellow polishes I've tried but it's no walk in the park.

This is one yellow I can agree with. Most other yellow I've tried have been too garish for my pale, cool toned skin. I love the softer hue of this color. I just wish I could get an even finish. So far chipping and tip wear has been minimal.

I'd repurchase because this is only yellow that really flatters me and its application is better than others. I do wish yellows were easier to apply--I guess it's the nature of the pigment. Give Banana Bandana a go, just have patience.

A Wax On Candles (I'm So Cheesy)

Lately, I've been on a candle kick. I don't know what prompted this obsession but I have a feeling it has to do with the fact I'm free to burn away at home--unlike at school. My mom loves candles too--they're just a great way to treat yourself and others! I'm a bit picky about my scents though. I don't care for Yankee candles, which are readily available where I live, and I think Bath and Body Works candles are overpriced for the product. My favorite candle makers would have to be Trapp and Tyler Candles. However, I'm really just getting into them so if anyone knows some good brands let me know!

Today I bought a Tyler Candle Votive in "Hippie Chick" at a local beauty store. They didn't have any larger sizes in this scent and I like it so much I'll probably order a full size online when it runs out. Votives are a great to "test drive" a certain scent and see how much you like over time without wasting a lot of money. I paid $1.90 for my Hippie Chick votive! Trapp votives run around $3.50. This little candles are a great way to add scent, warmth, and light at a party. Or grab a few different scents for a perfect gift!

Back to Tyler's "Hippie Chick"--Tyler's website describes the scent as a "hint of vanilla bean melds with rich exotic patchouli." Honestly, that does not sound like a scent I'd like! I'm a big citrus-y person and I love floral scents. But seriously, this candle smells DIVINE! The mix of the scents is lush, green, and exotic without being over bearing.

I also recommend Tyler's High Maintenance (a very popular scent) which is described as a "floral, woody blend combined with patchouli & vanilla with a heavy musk undertone!" And Limelight for citrus lovers like me-- an "invitingly clean, fresh fusion of pure mandarin oranges with a shocking touch of lime as a top note, a slight undertone of rich vanilla bean oil gives this a unique twist."

You can find Tyler candles at many beauty stores and boutiques or online at Tyler Candle Store. Sizes range from votive to a 70 oz. jar! A 3.4 oz jar is currently $6.25 on their main website and set of 4 votives is only $8! I found slightly less expensive prices for Tyler candles at The English Rose Gifts and Decor Website and All In Good Taste's website as well.

If you're looking for a wide variety of scents, check out Candles By Victoria. Her hand poured candles have been reviewed excellently by several bloggers. Her line is incredibly cute and clever! I love the idea of "Surprise Candle" which is filled with a layer of different scents for $7.00 plus shipping and handling. Candles By Victoria currently has over 527 scents--definetly something for everyone. You can even special request a scent! Her most popular size, Country Jar Candles, run $8.25 plus S&H for 9 oz and $12.25 plus S&H for 16 oz.

Finally, my mom and I both agree on Trapp candles, even though I love floral scents and she is a green, spicey fan. Trapp Candles' tag line is "A Bottle of Perfume in Every Candle" and they were not joking. These candles are scented heavily without being overwhelming. The scents are rich with a lot of depth. I love Pink Grapefruit (and it smells exactly like a pink grapefruit), Jasmine Gardenia (ditto, smells exactly what it sounds like), and Bob's Flower Shoppe (it's that just a cute name? it smells like the mixture of greens and floral scents you'd encounter in a garden nursery). Trapp Candles does not sell their products online from their main site but you can view their products and scent descriptions here. Check out Thebestcandle.com for a range of Trapp products. A votive runs at $3.25, a small 2.1 oz candle at $6.50, a medium 5.oz at $16, and a large 7 oz. comes in at $21 (plus S&H, of course).

Mellow Yellow

Yellow is a big color for the summer so I thought I'd highlight some recent yellow makeup items. Yellow is a color that adds brightness and fun to any out fit or style but it can be difficult to find the most flattering shade.

For me, I'm fair skinned and mostly cool toned so a lemon yellow is the most flattering. Olive and warmer skin tones may find a more golden toned yellow to be the best choice. And those with deep, dark skin tones can pull of a bright, traffic light yellow with no problem. The fairest of fair or the color shy will favor an icy light pastel yellow hue.

Yellow nail polish is popping up everywhere, from high to low end lines. Check out these options to get on the trend:

You've probably seen Sally Hansen's newest Insta-Dri nail polish at various drugstores. The shade "Lightening" (yes, that's how they spell it) is a super bright yellow creme. I definetly reccommend this color is you want to test drive the shade at a lower price or if you're looking for stop-and-stare color pay off. Retails for about $5.29.

OPI's Need Sunglasses? is a bright, mustardy yellow shade. This hue is definetly one that will favor warm toned girls. Try applying the color over a white nail polish base to intensify color-pay off. Most OPI nail polishes retail for around $8.50.

Here's a color for light skinned lovelies and those shy of the yellow polish trend. Nubar's Lemon Sorbet is aptly named for its icy pale lemon shade. This color is subtle and very wearable. Retails for around $7.50.

Now here's a polish I can't wait to get my hands on. Butter London is an incredibly popular nail line at the moment with its salons finding great success in the 3-Free Market. Cheeky Chops is a fun, banana creme perfect for cool tones. It's worth a splurge and retails for $14.00.

Yellow polish can be hard to work with and quite often streaky. Your best bet is use a strong base coat with a ridge filler, such as Seche Vite Ridgefilling, and apply the polish with patience. Most likely, you'll need at least two coats. A speedy top coat is a most and I favor Out The Door.

The yellow craze doesn't stop with nail polish. MAC just launched it's Style Warriors collection featuring the eyeshadow shade, Bright Future. The eyeshadow seems to be a standout from the collection and retails for $14.50.

For a less expensive option, try L'Oreal's eyeshadow duo in Flamboyant from their HiP line. I swear by HiP duos. I think they're the best drugstore shadows I've tried in terms of selection, pigmentation, and wear. This duo comes with a yellow and purple shade which can be worn seperately or together as a complement (purple & yellow are opposites on the color wheel so they work great together). The duo retails for about $8 but places such as CVS and Walgreens often have L'Oreal products BOGOF or BOGO 1/2 off.

Hard to believe, but yellow is even turning as a popular lip color! Yellow toned lip glosses add shimmer and dimension to lips alone but have great color changing properties when paired with a lipstick. If you're looking for a subtle yellow lip gloss you can wear along or along with other lip colors, I highly recommend MAC's Goldyrocks Dazzleglass ($18.00) and Victoria Secret's Beauty Rush Lip gloss in Appletini ($7).

Back, Back! And MAC- Attack!

There are probably cobwebs all over this blog! I have not updated in months. Not that many people read this blog but I do have a stat counter (*dun dun dun*) so I know that when I was posting often, I received at least a few hits.

But honestly, I'd probably keep this thing up or try to if only one person read it because writing about beauty and reading beauty blog is just a big hobby of mine.

Unfortunately, when I'm at school I generally don't have as much time to post. But it's summer now! I'm looking forward to re-vamping this blog.

I've already made a few summer beauty buys worth posting. They are....a Mineralized Blush from the Grand Duo Collection in 'Love Rock' ($22.50) and a LE Dazzle glass in 'Love Alert' ($18.00). Truly gorgeous. Check out some pictures of my purchases below to see.

I've already received a lot of compliments on my Love Alert lip gloss. This is my first dazzle glass and I'm very impressed! Honestly, I was not expecting much and figured the color would be too sheer to wear on it's own. Not too at all! It's a beautiful, sparkling raspberry red that is perfect for any time of year. Great color when you want some red in the summer without a full on red lip.

Here's a stock photo of the Double Dazzle collection. I might go back and get Steppin' Out or Funtablulous (purple-y toned gloss that is getting a lot of love from beauty gurus). But for now I'm enjoying Love Alert!

Lily Pulitzer: Beachy Keen Fragrances

Sephora is now selling Lily Pulitzer's new fragrance line. The collection itself is made up of three scents: Wink, Beachy, and Squeeze in perfume, lotion, and candle form. I only saw the perfumes at Sephora but the candles and lotions are found Sephora and Pultizer's websites. The packaging is absolutely adorable. Each scent comes in an old fashion glass bottle with a matching ribbon around the stopper. Wink is a light pink, Beachy an aqua blue, and Squeeze a pale yellow shade. The stand out of the collection for me was Squeeze. I love citrus smells and Squeeze is a delicious burst of energizing orange. Wink is a light floral with notes of pear nectar, rose, lillies, and more. It's a very nice scent but didn't wow me as much as Squeeze. Beachy is an interesting mix of citrus and sea. I found this scent quite enjoyable but I feel it would be more easily duped than Squeeze. I think these fragrances are delightful, fitting in well with the lifestyle branding of Lily Pultizer.

New Favorite Shampoo!

Mmm! I am obsessed with Herbal Essences' new shampoo, Featherweight. You've probably seen their new line, Hydralicious, featuring three new shampoos and matching conditioners (Featherweight, Self-Targeting, and Reconditioning). The bottle and product have a pretty swirl of multicolored hues, scented with floral essences.

I'm always on the hunt for a new shampoo. I have naturally light blonde hair. As with a lot of blonde hair, it's quite fine and prone to breakage. I do have a fair of amount of hair, however, which is naturally wavy in texture. My roots are oily and ends are very dry. Needless to say, I think my hair is kind of a pain some days.

Well, this shampoo is marvelous! First of all, it smells divine, scented with water lily and passion fruit. The packaging is adorable and I love the fun swirls in the product. It lathers up and rinses out quickly. I grabbed hold of my hair after using Featherweight and noticed the wet strands felt plumped up and noticeably thicker. After I dried my hair, it felt so soft, clean, and thick! I am impressed by such great results from a shampoo that retails for around $4. Featherweight is a perfect name for the light, fluffy volume, it gives your hair. I'm going to try out the conditioner to see if it works just as well. Definitely give this one a try if you have fine hair!

MAC Hello Kitty & OPI's South Beach

This past week has been crazy getting into the semester at school and my poor blog has been neglected. I've still had makeup on the brain, although my Shakespeare course is definitely dominating my thoughts right now. I've been playing with my Urban Decay Sustainable Eyeshadow Palette (love! great for night time looks), exploring the Sinful nail polish line at Walgreens (great deal, by the way) and picked up two new drugstore mascaras: L'Oreal's Voluminous and Maybelline's Colossal.

I thought I'd blog about the two beauty collections I'm most excited about for Spring. Spring is definetly one of my favorite times for makeup--I love the airy, etheral look and floral colors. Sooo without further ado...

Of course, I am ridicuously excited about the MAC Hello Kitty line. I loved Hello Kitty as a child, maybe even more than Barbie, and I love what MAC is doing with this line. I want pretty much everything but I'm attempting to more savvy with my makeup purchases. Here are my top picks from the collection:

Cute Ster lipstick (first lippie on left in picture below). This has been described as a "sheer peachy pink with pearl". I have a lot of blue toned pink lipsticks and several frosts so I thought this one would work for me better than Strayin'. I also want to see Fashion Mews (not shown), the pale lavender lipstick, in person.

Too Dolly Eyeshadow Palette. It comes with four eye shadows: Yogurt, Romping, Too Dolly, Stately Black (L to R in picture below). This palette is my must purchase. I love the colors and I think they'll work perfectly for my light, cool toned skin. The Lucky Tom palette is also pretty and features warm colors.

On the Prowl Nail Lacquer (middle polish in picture below). I think this color looks gorgeous--I love silvery grey nails. They can transition from day to night and the Hello Kitty figure on the bottle is adorable!

For some reason, I'm a huge fan of the OPI Nail Collections. I enjoy seeing what themes and tongue in cheek nail names they'll come out with next. This spring OPI is launching the South Beach collection. The pictures don't have quick the wow factor of say, the India collection, but I think South Beach has a beautiful range of colors. My favorites so far:

Done Out in Deco- a lilac creme color.

Overexposed in South Beach-a dark magenta color with shimmer.

Feelin' Hot-Hot-Hot- a cool toned bright pink creme.

Bride Wars Movie Review & Beauty Looks

Bride Wars was released today and stars Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson. The plot is pretty self-explanatory from the previews. People pleasing Emma (Anne Hathaway) and her assertive, trendy friend Liv (Kate Hudson) find themselves engaged at the same time and mistakenly booked for the same wedding day. This slip up brings out the Bridezilla in the friends who go to great lengths to sabotage each other's special day. I won't give away the whole story (although my sister called the ending pretty quickly) but I will say if you've seen 27 Dresses, you've pretty much seen Bride Wars. I'd say 27 Dresses was better but Bride Wars shines in its sheer magazine like quality. More than anything, I enjoyed seeing Hudson and Hathaway's stunning outifts, fabulous wedding dresses, and trendy makeup. Overall, I'd give the film 2.5 stars out of 5. It's a worth a rental with friends.

Interestingly enough, despite the fact Bride Wars was filmed before the culmination of the current economic situation, the film reveals a shift in "of the moment" makeup looks. Hudson whose character is an aggressive go-getter is made up in heavy dark liner, bronzed cheeks, and nude lips. Her hair is stick straight, fashioned with blunt bangs. Clearly, this look is very "five months ago," denoting high maintenance, penchants for luxury, and fatter wallets.

Yet Hathaway's character depicts what we'll be seeing in beauty this season. Her skin is clear and luminous, with softly rimmed doe eyes, and full berry lips. Hathway's hair is loose and natural, styled in simple waves. A focus on low-maintenance, simple elegance has returned to beauty with our slimmer pocket books and greater financial burdens. I gather that Hudson's snow bunny meets rock star look will remain in style but stylists will be following Hathaway's lead, in an effort to remain on trend and show some of economic sensibility.

Here's a sample list of budget friendly products that can be used to recreate Hathaway's look:

Face: If you already own a natural liquid foundation and setting powder, you're set. Be sure to choose one that is perfectly matched. The key here is embrace the "my look but better" style. Suggestions for liquid foundation: Revlon ColorStay's Makeup with SoftFlex ($11.69 on Drugstore.com). This liquid foundation comes in a variety of 20 shades and in combination/oily or normal/dry formulas. Contains SPF 6.
Suggestions for setting powder: Revlon ColorStay Pressed Powder($8.99 on Drugstore.com). Oil free. Six shades.

Cheeks: You can be pretty versatile with your choice in brush. A light, pale pink powder applied with a light hand would be ideal. However, since skin tones vary, coral might be better for warmer tones. The whole emphasis with the cheeks should be sheer, used to waken up the skin without relying on a "pop" of color.
Suggestions for blush: Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc Free Mineral Blush ($10.95 on Drugstore.com). Comes in six natural colors. Oil free. Try Pink Glow for porcelain skin, Rose Glow for medium, and Warming Glow for dark skin tones.

Eyes: Here, you'll want to do a softly rimmed eye with a dark brown or black kohl liner depending on your preference. Be sure to create a thin line by using soft, quick strokes on your lash line. Softly smudge the liner with a q-tip so that the eyes are defined without being harshly lined or smoked. Use an eyelash curler (try heating it up for a few seconds with a hair dryer for a better curl) and apply your favorite lengthening/volumizing mascara. Be sure to separate your lashes and remove any clumps. You want long, soft, feathery lashes.

Suggestions for eye liner: Rimmel's Soft Kohl Kajal Eyepencil in Jet Black or Sable Brown (2.99 at Ulta.com).
Suggestions for mascara: Maybelline's Full & Soft in Soft Black or Brown ($5.99 on Drugstore.com). Clinique's Long Pretty Lashes in Black or Brown ($14.00 on Sephora.com).

Lips: The lips are definitely my favorite part about this look! Start with a soft, waxy lip balm like Lypsl. This product will give your lips enough moisturize to look naturally soft and somewhere in between matte and shine. For your color, use a soft berry lipstick applied fully to the mouth.
Suggestions for balm: Lypsyl Regular Lip Balm ($3.29 on Drugstore.com).
Suggestions for lip color: Cover Girl's Lipslicks in Daring ($3.99 on Drugstore.com). Or their new Outlast Lipstain in Wild Berry Wink or Berry Smooch ($7.49 on Drugstore.com).

Glamorous! A tousled bun would go great with look as Hathaway wears in the film. Enjoy!

Makeup Manual Review

Ok, so I'm finally getting to my review of Bobbi Brown's Makeup Manual. I meant to post this much sooner but I went out of town with family and I've been getting organized for my new semester. Anyway, I'm going to give you my thoughts and an overview of this beauty book!

Makeup Manual: For Everyone from Beginner to Pro was, of course, written by Bobbi Brown and published by Springboard Press. The first edition was released this past December 2008 and contains 221 pages. The book retails for about $32.00 new.

Onto the fun stuff! The Makeup Manual is divided into two parts: Basics and Artistry. Basics begins with Bobbi Brown's own personal philosophy on beauty, explaining her work as a makeup artist and how her skills progressed over time. Perhaps one of my most favorite sections of the book can be found in Chapter 2: Equipment. Here, coupled with beautiful photographs, Brown describes own to set up your perfect makeup kit for home, evening, work etc. The next section of this chapter has a tool guide with just about every makeup brush you could imagine and its description/uses. This section is essential for those of us who walk into a beauty store surrounded by intriguing brushes without a clue of their purpose!

The next chapters of the Part I: Basics each focus on Skin, Face, Lips, and Eyes. Brown's nutritional advice is nice but seems unnecessary as its elementary information. However, I felt her section on Moisturizers & Sun Protection as well as the Skincare Glossary were fascinating and informative. Who knew Vitamin E acts as a mild sunscreen (see pg. 45 of Makeup Manual)?

The chapter Face explains how to choose and apply corrector, concealer and foundation. Most of us with a solid makeup background probably have a good grasp on these concepts. However, we can all use visual refreshers, provided by Brown's up close pictures. Brown also explains how to work with diverse and unique skin conditions (think multi-toned skin and birth marks) as well as how to apply bronzer and blush. I think her explanation of blush was absolutely flawless and I love her descriptions of the different blush formulas (from powder to chubby pencils).

The Lips chapter was a bit a shorter than I expected. Brown reveals a guide for selecting lip color by using the natural color of your lips. This is very helpful to those who want to stay in the natural, fresh look. Again, there is a wonderful glossary defining the formulas of lip products.

If you buy Makeup Manual for one reason, buy it for the Eyes chapter. Brown covers everything from eyebrow shaping to creating glam eyes to using false eyelashes. The pictures of excellent as with the rest of the book. I love how she captures each step. I would have like to see a few more images of her blending techniques.

Part I of Makeup Manual ends with the 10 Step Guide for Perfect Makeup, tips for ageless beauty, and bridal makeup techniques. These sections are all great reference tools.

In Part II, Brown explains how to become a beauty professional. She reveals the essential equipment for every artist's kit (15+ shades of foundation in various formulas!) as well as various career options in the beauty industry. My favorite part of this section were the magazine photographs. Brown really shows off her wild and creative side we usually don't get to see with her line's focus on natural beauty. The artistry section is interesting for anyone bitten by the beauty bug, even if you don't want to go pro. It's always fun to learn and explore. Brown gives advice on makeup for photographs and reveals a fascinating time line of the history of makeup.

I've owned two of Bobbi Brown's other beauty books (Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty from my jr. high years and Bobbi Brown Beauty Evolution) and Makeup Manual is by far the best. I'd say Makeup Manual is geared toward those at the intermediate level- those comfortable with everyday makeup, but looking to fine-tune their knowledge and techniques. It's interesting and somewhat unexpected that Brown would combine this style with a section on makeup artistry. I'd be more likely to expect to see a section on expanding your techniques rather than one on going pro. However, I'd definitely recommend this book to all beauty bugs and product junkies. It's a beautiful reference and enlightening read.

I honestly thought all those Allure magazine free give aways were fake (I've never known anyone to win) but I still entered them fairly often this summer. And guess what?

That's right.I actually won something! An unmarked package came in the mail for me today. I had no clue what it was but ripped it open nonetheless and....

Tada! A Matrix Biolage Freeze Fix Hair Spray! Ha, not incredibly exciting but a nice product. It retails for around $14 and I just picked up a new flat iron so this should come in handy. I'm definitely entering more Allure contests now.

Revealing just how beauty bug bitten she is, Bloomwood says, "You know that thing when you see someone cute and he smiles and your heart kind of goes like warm butter sliding down hot toast? Well, that's what it's like when I see a store." Ironically enough, she takes a job at a financial journalist and hilarity/shoe throwing ensues. It sounds like a reverse The Devil Wears Prada with a love interest as well.

Even more blog worthy is the fact that Too Faced is introducing a palette inspired by the film. It's an Ulta exclusive, priced at $29.50. It contains the whole nine yards: face, lip, and eye products. The book is, of course, girly and glamorous. The products are quite small in person so this would be a great buy for those new to Too Faced products, as a travel palette, or a gift for a beauty loving friend.

How To: Remove and Prevent Blackheads

There's a little something that plagues most of us with skin woes. Blackheads. Most of us know how to treat the every day pimple but blackheads are much more difficult. I've devised my own routine for removing and preventing this annoyingly stubborn spots.

First, you'll need to understand what a blackhead is (feel free to scroll down to skip to my method of extraction):

Blackheads are a precursor to acne (think of how many times you've found a pimple the next morning after spotting a clogged pore). A blackhead is essentially a clogged pore, created by excessive oil production. The oil turns black when exposed to air, which gives them their nasty color. Blackheads are also created by dead skin cells accumulated in pores mixed with building oil production.

But all we really know is that we want to get rid of them, right?

So here goes my blackhead extraction method. It's clean and simple.

You'll need:

A sink basin
Wash cloths
A black head extracting tool* (I've attached photos of these tools). They can found in drugstores (I bought mine in Rite-Aid) or even Ulta. I prefer to use the smaller loop end because I find it encloses the black head fully and easily "loops away" excess)
Soap free cleanser (optional but recommended)

1) First steam your face with hot water. I usually fill my bathroom sink basin with hot water and lean over the basin for a few minutes until my pores feel opened.

2) Next, if you're doing this removal for someone else, place two hot (but not scalding) wash cloths on her face. Otherwise, you can skip this step unless you have particularly resistant pores.

3) Retrieve a clean blackhead removal tool. I prefer to use the loop end. You can alternate or use the opposite end if you wish. Press down on affected areas. The blackhead should quickly "pop". Use the loop to clean away any excess. Clean with a damp wash cloth.

4) Repeat this steps. If the blackhead does not quickly loosen, do not press down further on the area. Do not scratch or poke at this area. Leave it alone or you'll risk the chance of scarring and/or infection. You can place a loosening mask such as the Mint Julep Mint Mask over stubborn areas and try removal again after rinsing the mask off with hot water.

5) It may help to slightly squeeze areas for an easier removal. Be sure not to sure your nails.

6) After you've successfully removed everything, wash your face with cold water to close your pores and soothe the skin. I prefer to do this removal at night as the face may remain red. Be very gentle with your skin after removal. I generally follow up with a gentle soap free cleanser and forgo topical treatments for the evening. Absolutely do not use a cleaning astringent (it will burn horribly--trust me!)

Always make sure to clean your tools and to use different tools (ie. don't share, ew!) for different people.

Now that you're black head free or nearly so, how do you stay that way?

First and foremost, I recommend visiting a dermatologist if possible. They can give you professional advice for your specific skin type. They may prescribe anti-biotics to be taken orally, which have done wonders for my skin. What I recommend is just that--a recommendation. Please consult your dermatologist first if you have one.

Salicyclic acid, a BHA, can help ease blackheads by causing the skin to shed, thereby lessening the chance of clogged pores (See the Neutrogena Scrub below for an example). I use Brevoxyl face wash, which contains benzoyl peroxide (another great blackhead/acne fighting ingredient)and its accompanying soap free cleanser. You can also find drug store skin care brands with benzoyl peroxide, such as Cetaphil.

Most of us also know to use a scrub to remove dead skin and thereby, preventing clogging. I prefer Neutrogena's Oil Free Acne Wash Daily Scrub. You don't have to pay a lot for a scrub and this one gently exfoliates without stripping your skin.

Retionids are also useful. Retin-A is simply amazing its its ability to speed up cell turn over and preventing excessive oil production. You MUST see a dermatologist to use this product. It takes time and patience to work as well as medical advice.

Masks and pore strips can also be helpful. As mentioned above, I prefer the Mint Julep Mask by Queen Helene. It's quite inexpensive and can also be used as a topical treatment for pimples. It loosens up blackheads for extraction and removes superficial ones. I am not a huge fan of pore strips--they often leave an icky residue and irritate the sensitive skin around my nose. They are worth a shot for superficial blackheads, however, and are readily available at drug stores.

Also be sure to keep your hair clean and off your face as this can aggravate skin problems. And always, always wash off your make up before bed!

I hope this helped. Black heads are so aggravating but can be combated with patience and trial and error of various techniques!

Saving for a Rainy Day

If you're like me, rain can put a damper on your day. I usually grudgingly tread to class through the puddles, trying not to resemble a wet dog too closely. But today at Hallmark (of all places) I spied some fantastic galoshes. I know these would put a huge smile on my face and others' on a rainy day. Enjoy!

Western Chief Rain Boots-

Are these not the cutest rain boots you've ever seen? They come in a variety of styles--separated in "Splashy Prints" like polka dots and stripes and "Characters" like frogs and dalmatians. They are also some nice solids as well. Prices range from $20 to $59.95. Patterns like the polka dots are easily duped by Target brands but I definitely recommend the more unusual styles.

I was trying to come up with fun blog ideas and it hit me: what's the number one most fascinating new development in pop culture? The cougar. Sure, Mrs. Robinson has been around for awhile but cougars, those are a new breed. Cougars conjure up a completely different image that makes Mrs. Robinson look meek and milk. Predators hunting for their prey, not with razor sharp teeth and a husky growl (well, actually...) but with the following accessories:

5. A tan. Not just any ordinary healthy glow, but a deep burnt orange color, perfected only by years of sun worshiping in the glorified tanning bed. The cougar usually gives off a powerful coconut tanning oil scent, lingering long after she makes me attack. A crumbly bronzer compact and shimmering body spray are but added weapons of mass destruction.

4. Speaking of mass destruction, no cougar is complete with a set of powerful devices: "augmented" breasts. No longer continue with an old-fashioned boob lift, these puppies must be lifted to mythic proportions, bolted on firmly, and stretched to the size that would make Pamela Anderson jealous. A tummy tuck often follows to ensure that the 26 whittled waist accents the 42 inch bust line on a 5'3 frame.

3. Looking for just the thing to emphasize your tiny-ness while proclaiming you've got the best money can buy? Look no further, cougar. The Hummer is your car of choice. Sure, you're not exactly navigating through jagged terrains or high altitudes, but that Target parking lot is scary enough. Wouldn't want Grandma in the Corolla to get the wrong idea and steal your prime sparking spot. Rear view not included since you won't be using it anyway. Just cross your fingers and hope you don't mow down any unsuspecting strangers outside Kirkland's. Feel free to exchange any other mirrors or turn signals for a Route 44 Diet Coke from Sonic or an over-sized sunglasses case.

2. Let's get back to practical matters. No cougar would be compete without her stunning visage. Years of hard partying and yo yo dieting don't matter when you've got botox to freeze your forehead and lipo to alter gravity. Number one rule of a cougar: if it ain't broke, fill her up! Trout pouts are essential to the cougar's allure, layered with Victoria's Secret newest plumping lip gloss. Feel free to mix and match various products from the Wet n Wild line you've been using since tenth grade.

1. What cougar would be complete without her mane? A bleach blonde weave is necessary to attract men from behind (tight white jeans also come in handy). Roots are no problem as long as the hair extends far past the shoulders, often in varying shades of flaxen. Brunette extensions are acceptable too but must be paired with highlighting or a monotone effect. The weave is the perfect accessory to deflect men from noticing your mutton dressed as lamb appearance. Who needs age appropriate-ness when you've got Jessica Simpson's Clip 'N' Go Line!

Major Makeup/Beauty Lemmings:

It's Christmas time...the time of giving and receiving, my friends. Since I've got my all my Christmas shopping done (except for my pups!) here's a list of what the beauty junkie in me will be dreaming of come Christmas Eve:

1. Urban Decay Sustainable Shadow Box

This gorgeous palette contains 10 UD eyeshadows and a mini version of their Primer potion in an eco friendly box. Pretty make up + artsty box + environmentally friendly makes for a happy MC. I am pretty darn sure I'm getting this beauty (Ok, I was in Sephora with my mom when she bought it...) and can't wait to experiment with the colors. I've always loved UD--they're really geniuses at marketing when it comes to attracting young, artistic buyers who want cool edgy not scary edgy.

2. Burberry Brit Perfume

Stye and size wise you really can not beat Burberry when it comes to perfumes. I'm trying to branch out on my fragrances. I usually do a sheer body splash or Escada's Into the Blue by day(which people are obsessed with...hello Marshalls) and Lancome's Tresor by night. Hopefully I'll be calling a Burberry Or just a Burberry perfume in general. They all smell amazing to me except for The Beat (too bad b/c I loved the ad campaign for that scent) and the packaging in divine. This perfume could be my newest love potion :)

3. Ugg Cardy Knit Boots

I know it's fashionable to hate Uggs but damn, these boots are cute. I love the versatility of being able to wear them pulled up or folded over combined with a classic knit style. The buttons are precious and boots just make me happy. Ugg's are ridiculously hard to find during the Christmas season (Neiman Marcus and the like limit buyers to four per household..ha). Hope to find some under my Xmas tree!

4. Gorgeously Green: Eight Simple Steps to an Earth-Friendly Lifestyle by Sophie Uliano

Not strictly a beauty product/purchase but definitely a handbook to appreciating natural beauty. I have been bitten by the green bug. It's a "trendy" cause but I've always secretly (or not so secretly to my close friends and family) natural sciences, the environment, and animals. I recently went vegetarian (I'm an animal nut..deal with it) and wanted to decrease my carbon foot print.

5. ASPCA Membership

Ok, this one really doesn't fit the list. But like I said, I LOVE animals. I know some people think it's kooky but I just feel that animals are to be treasured and admired. As humans, I feel people should be the voice for animals. This doesn't mean adopting a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle but it DOES mean respecting other creatures and in turn, your fellow man. I get hyper passionate about this subject. In general, just do good :) Makes the world go round a little better for everyone.
